From central Mexico, this species has a low, squat form featuring wide, yellow banded central spines. The spines and low stature contribute to a fierce appearance and earns it an English common name of Horse Crippler. It does not offset. The flowers are a dark pink. These plants are seedlings in 5-inch pots.
