This species is native to northeastern Mexico and the southwestern United States from Texas to southeastern Arizona. It has finely pinnate green leaves and rather stout black spines. The flowers are yellow and ball-shaped with strongly exserted whitish-yellow stamens. The seed pods are large and undulate. These plants are seedlings in one-gallon pots.
