This species is widely distributed from sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian peninsula to Pakistan and western India. Its dried sap is known as gum arabic and has useful medicinal purposes, and the best trees for this production are from the Sudan. It has finely pinnate green leaves and rather stout black spines. The flowers are yellow and ball-shaped. These plants are seedlings in 4-inch pots.
