From the coastal mountains of the Western Cape Province of South Africa, H. minima var. minima is a small species related to H. pumila and one that slowly offsets, forming small clumps. It occurs in the winter-rainfall area, but this does not seem to affect its survival in the hot and summer-rainfall Tucson. These plants (VDV 987) are seedlings in 5-inch pots.
