This is a vaguely known species from the Klein Karoo of South Africa. The leaves are relatively smooth, light gray-green, and imbricated on the upright stems. It differs from A. spiralis in that A. smutsiana does not have the roughness on the leaves. Although it can turn reddish in bright sunlight, the leaves are more of a medium-green color in greenhouse culture. These plants are rooted cuttings in 4-inch pots.
