This species, one of the most frost hardy of the Aloaceae, is common on rocky slopes and mountain tops in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and Lesotho. The slender branches of young plants, as well as the narrow, nearly linear leaves, belie the fact that the mature plant is a small tree with relatively broad, lancheolate leaves. The flowers are orange to red and held in a relatively short raceme. Our plants had no damage recently at 23F but this species is easily capable of mid-teens for low temperatures. Our plants are rooted cuttings in 4-inch pots.
