This small species, from northern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya, has small, spiny stems arising from a fibrous rootstock that becomes a pseudocaudex with extended time. The cyathia are yellow-red. This species, like many similar ones, is much nicer if it can be grown compactly, which is difficult in Arizona owing to the heat. These plants are multistemmed rooted cuttings in 6-inch pots.
