This low clump-forming species is from southern Peru into central Chile in the Atacama Desert. What is noteworthy about this species is the spherical joints that inspired its name. These spiny joints produce orange flowers with orange-red centers. Forma sulfurea has dense yellow glochids that give an overall yellow appearance to the stems. These plants are rooted cuttings in 4-inch pots.
