This species is widespread in north-central Mexico with its distribution centered on Tamaulipas. Known in the US as blue Mexican fencepost, this species characteristically has blue-green stems with small black spines. The flowers are small and greenish-white and are produced in the summer. These plants suffer damage at temperatures below about 22 F and are rooted cuttings in 3-inch pots.
