From scattered sites in northwestern Tanzania and Zambia, this species is one of the spiny stemmed shrubs that is rarely sold. The relatively thin stems have blackish spines on dark spine shields. The cyathia are yellow-orange. E. reclinata, the closest species, tends to form more-compact shrubs with whitish spine shields. These plants are rooted cuttings in 4-inch pots.
