This species is considered to be part of the M. curvispina complex distributed in Mexico, central America, into northern South America, and also in the Caribbean. However, it is a small species with a dark green body topped with the white cephalium, and the plant has white curving spines. The flowers are light violet. These plants are seedlings in 8-inch pots.
