From the southern Arabian Peninsula and northeastern Africa, this species forms a large-stemmed shrub that dominates hillsides. The branches are 3-5 angled with a horny, spiny margin. The cyathia are yellow. Variety tortirama occurs in southwestern Yemen and has a spiral arrangement of stems and tubercles. These plants are seedlings in one-gallon pots.
