This species has a wide distribution from the southeastern United States through Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. The leaves are pliable and folded, arising from an above-ground pseudobulb that has a glaucous blush. The numerous small flowers are purplish-brown and allegedly resemble the head of a German shepherd dog. These plants are rooted offsets in 5-inch pots.
