Group: |
Sansevieria elliptica |
Etymology: |
This species is named for Robert Culverwell Stenning, who found these plants. |
Distribution: |
Eastern Uganda near Mount Elgon. |
Brief Description: |
This is an acaulescent, narrow-leaf rhizomatous species with 1-2 elliptical to ovate leaves 24-45 cm long by 8.5-12.5 cm wide. The leaves are erect to spreading, often bending near the midpoint and having a slightly undulating margin. The rough medium-green leaves have lighter colored bands and blotches and are broadly guttered with a soft tip. The inflorescence is simple, 34-59 cm tall. The fertile portion is about 2/3rds of the inflorescence length and is densely flowered with 2-5 flowers per cluster. |
Similar Species: |
Sansevieria stenningii is related to Sansevieria masoniana, which occurs farther to the west in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but S. stenningii is a much smaller plant. Its leaves, patterned and roughened, indicate it belongs in the Sansevieria elliptica group, most of which also occurs in East Africa and Somalia. This species could be a link to Sansevieria specksii, which occurs in West Africa. |
