Sansevieria aubrytiana Carrière

Protologue: Revue Horticule: 449 (1861).
Subgenus: Sansevieria
Group: Sansevieria trifasciata
Etymology: The epithet honors Aubry le Comte, a French administrator who collected this plant while he was Governor of Gabon.
Distribution: Angola, Gabon, and possibly Tanzania.
Brief Description: This is a broad-leaf, acaulescent and rhizomatous perennial from west-central Africa. The smooth, pliable leaves are in a rosette of 4-5, are erect, and are lanceolate with a length of 38-60 cm and a width of 5-7 cm. The color is medium green with a glaucous blush and wide light green irregular bands or patterning on both surfaces. The tip is soft and the margin hard, brownish-red, and sometimes has a whitish edge. The inflorescence is 45-60 cm tall with dense flowers. This is the only extant species for which the number of flowers per cluster is unknown.
Similar Species: Sansevieria aubrytiana is similar to many other broad-leaf species in its distribution, especially Sansevieria longiflora and S. trifasciata. It’s disjunct distribution suggests it could be more widely distributed than is currently known, particularly in the central African countries of Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
